Digital product passport
Machine-readable product record, phased in by product group.
A QR code on the product linking to a structured record of materials, origin, repairability and recycling. It is coming, product group by product group, but for most sellers the obligation sits upstream with the manufacturer. Several apps are already listed for it; none has meaningful adoption because nothing is mandatory yet outside batteries.
- Legal basis
- Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, ESPR) · Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 Art. 77 (battery passport)
- Who it binds
- Manufacturers and importers of products in groups covered by a delegated act. Batteries are first, from 18 February 2027; textiles, furniture, electronics and others follow as their delegated acts are adopted, each with at least an 18-month transition.
- Who is exempt
- Retailers who neither manufacture nor import; food, feed and medicines are out of ESPR scope.
- Penalty
- National, once a delegated act applies. Nothing is enforceable today for most product groups.
